HISTORY

In the late 1960s, Italian immigrants Don, Lino and Serge Fratin planted vines in the Grampians, seeking to create a piece of Veneto in Victoria. In 1969 they established the Old Block Shiraz, now the foundation of our estate's signature Shiraz style. After the challenging 1980 vintage, consultant Trevor Mast joined the estate, redefining its future through a pioneering vision for cool-climate Shiraz. His influence shaped a style defined by intensity, perfume and distinctive spice, earning global acclaim. Acquired by the Rathbone family in 2002, Mount Langi Ghiran has continued to build on its foundation of honouring legacy while steadily refining its expression of distinctive cool-climate Shiraz.

VITICULTURE

Set between Mount Langi Ghiran and Mount Cole at around 350 metres elevation, our estate benefits from cooling air streams and natural mountain shading, which moderate heat, extend ripening and build natural acidity and complexity. Over thousands of years, erosion has formed rare granitic sands over red clay loams, soils naturally moderate vine vigour and accentuate the spicy, pepper‑driven character for which our Shiraz is known.

Our viticultural philosophy centres on understanding our land intimately. With one of the latest Shiraz harvests in Australia and mean January temperature of approximately 18.5°C, around 2°C cooler than the broader region, our long ripening season develops fruit with the elegance and complexity for which Mount Langi Ghiran wines are renowned.

WINEMAKING

Central to our winemaking philosophy is the picking of fruit when tannin and texture are at their peak. This approach is guided by an intimate understanding of our site and of each individual block, allowing us to respond precisely to the nuances of every season. We work only to elevate the purity and expression of our cool-climate fruit, shaped by seasonal variation. Small-batch ferments, careful extraction and considered use of French oak underpin wines of structure, clarity and precision. Each vintage is treated individually, with parcels assessed on their own merits and handled accordingly. This philosophy ensures every wine reflects its season, its site and a continual pursuit of refinement and excellence.
